Thanks to Philocrites, I’ve had several dozen new visitors the last few days. When items are cross-posted it is quite amazing the referral readership. So thanks Chris (aka Philocrites) and keep up your good work over there at the ever fascinating liberal religion and politics.
I met Chris years ago, online, at the edge of the beginning of the public internet boom (around 1994). He was working in a library in Salt Lake City, I was a student at the University of Oregon. Back then we had pine, could "finger" people and chat IRL with all text base commands and functions. We use top of the line Macintosh, but still it was extremely slow. I remember begininng to track email addresses at the Western UU Reunion/Experience for Young Adults in 1994. Only a handful of folks had them. My first email address that I paid for was email@example.com which now seems like a dream given that most folks don’t get their "name" @ anything on AOL or most other major servers. Anyways, Chris was a prolific, excellent writer, and helped make the old UUYAN-L @ Terraluna, an email listserv for young adults started by Steve Traugott, who I only met once or twice, quite interesting. I actually got into several huge debates there about Thomas Jefferson and the appropriateness of having a UUA District named after a slave holding White man. Can’t remember who I got into a "flame war" with (does anyone say flame anymore online?), but it got very detailed. Wish I could read those old files, wonder if anyone has them.
