Any Sources of UU History 1980-2005?

I’m seeking any publications, writings, books, essays, sermons, etc, on Unitarian Universalist History post 1980.  If you know if anything, I’d be deeply obliged.  I need sources for a paper (due in April).

  1. Depends how you define “history,” I suppose. Certainly there are any number of sources for events in UUism post 1980, mainly newspaper-type reports. Obviously the World/UU World is a major source. “Christian Century” tends to carry occasional stuff on current developments in UUism.

One of the only peer-reviewed articles that deals with post-1980 UUism that I can think of is Lee, Richard Wayne. “Strained Bedfellows: Pagans, New Agers, and ‘Starchy Humanists’ in Unitarian Universalism.” Sociology of Religion, vol. 56 (Winter 1995): 379-396.

There are also a small handful of post-1980 pages in these two books:

Bumbaugh, David E. “Unitarian Universalism: A Narrative History.” Chicago: Meadville-Lombard Press, 2000.

Morrison-Reed, Mark D. “Black Pioneers in a White Denomination.” (3rd edition) Boston: Skinner House Books, 1994.

    Also check out:

Ross, Warren R. “The Premise and the Promise: The Story of the Unitarian Universalist Association.” Boston: Skinner House Books, 2001.

Arnason, Wayne and Rebecca Scott. “We Would Be One: A History of Unitarian Universalist Youth Movements.” (revised and updated version) Boston: Skinner House Books, 2005.

Frost, Edward, ed. “With Purpose and Principle: Essays About the Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalism.” Boston: Skinner House Books, 1998.

UUA Commission on Appraisal. “Engaging Our Theological Diversity.” Boston: Unitarian Universalist Association, 2005.

UUA Commission on Appraisal. “Interdependence: Renewing Congregational Polity.” Boston: Unitarian Universalist Association, 1997.

Have you considered asking on the UU Historical Society listserve?

  2. Joseph,

The UUA Board web pages have links to a bunch of historical documents dealing with the LRY to YRUU transition (1976 to 1983) along with other YRUU-related reports (5 year review, 15 year review, etc). They are available as PDF downloads from this web page:

Back issues of Synapse and People Soup (UU youth magazines for YRUU and LRY) from 1973 to present are available online here as PDF downloads:

    Good luck,
    Steve
