Teaching World Religions Increases Respect

A new study is out (reported by American Baptist News "Teaching World Religions Increases Respect for Freedoms) suggesting that:

mandatory teaching about world religions in public schools can
increase teenagers’ respect for religious freedom and other
constitutional rights.

Right on!  Not only is this real within Unitarian Universalism already, but it supports my own notions and training as a secondary educator through Harvard’s Program on Religion and Secondary Education.  (Thanks to Tracey Wells for passing this along)

While the study was no slam dunk, focusing on a group of students in Modesto, California, not exactly Middle America, it did provide a worthy conclusion:

Bringing religious differences out in the open can help students
realize that, in America, even religious believers and non-believers
share a belief in the freedom of conscience.
