Getting Involved in Race in Oregon Politics

Earl Blumenauer, the congressman representing my neighborhood and family, has sparked questions in me around the development of leadership of color who have real potential to be candidates for elected office.  He donated $5000 to local candidates, selected by a community poll on his website.  A wonderful gift, the announcement and the choices revealed/reminded me of the overwhelming Whiteness of Oregon’s leadership.  My gut reaction matched another reader and we’ve both posted on the BlueOregon blog of progressive, democratic Oregonians.  Already there is instant tension and hyper sensitivity, reactionary comments, yet if we can’t dialogue about race within the Democratic Party, hope around racial justice feels very dim.  I have virtually zero belief that the Republican Party is an environment for such ideas of justice, in part given the heavy race-baiting of many campaigns and elected officials.  Democrats are not immune, nor ideal though.
