UU People of Color Go West

The annual DRUUMM conference, a gathering of Unitarian Universalist People of Color of all ages and backgrounds, is moving west to St Paul MN this year after four years at Murray Grove on the coastal shore of New Jersey.  The event will be held, as has become tradition, with a white anti-racist allies event.  The allies now have a recognized, growing organization named Allies for Racial Equity.  This has been a wonderful spiritual development in Unitarian Universalism, and marks another high water mark in addressing the spiritual distress of People of Color in the faith.  Both groups will be meeting at Unity-Unitarian, co-ministered by Rob and Janne Eller-Isaacs (whose son Jonah just wrote a nice piece about music and AIDS in Africa for the UU World), White ministers who have supported a number of People of Color into the UU ministry over the years.  Most of what I know about their anti-racist work dates back to their ministry in Oakland, CA.  I’m excited to see the DRUUMM/A.R.E. conference be held more centrally this year, and sad that I won’t be able to attend as I’ll be on ministerial internship in the Philippines during that time.  Best wishes to all.
